party profile

In 2004, Los Verdes reached an agreement with Spanish Socialists (PSOE) for the general elections and the European elections. The agreement included a Socialist-Green programmatic platform, the presence of Greens on the electoral lists and the commitment for Greens to take on responsibilities in a future left coalition government. A green MP was elected and joined the socialist group in the Congress and a green MEP was elected and joined the Green group in the European Parliament. In 2007, an other green MP entered the Socialist group in the Congress.

The 2007 national elections produced a bad result for Spanish greens. The green vote in Spain remained generally weak due to the lack of a strong central green party structure, the internal division of the green movement in Spain, a national political scene dominated by bipolarisation (PSOE-PP) and debate over nationalism and the Basque question, with the existence of many important regional parties. We can remark too the persistence of a communist left (Izquierda Unida - IU) that is trying to "green" its message, to the degree of trying to add "Los Verdes" to its official name (nevertheless IU -that is going through a very tough internal crisis- only won one seat in these elections).

The 2007 local elections brought around 70 green local council members, some of them in local governements (Mallorca, Basque Country, Canarias, Asturias, etc.) and for the first time local mayors (at least 3 in the region of Segovia, Málaga and Madrid). In 2008 was created the first Green Local Council members Network. To contact this network: concejalesverdes@gmail.com
