party profile |
Main Political Issues.
The party Bündnis 90/Die Grünen as it exists today, was created in May 1993 by associating the former Green Party Die Grünen and Bündnis 90, an alliance of east German civil rights movements. Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen has been successful in renewing the political profile of the environmentalist party. By emphasising environmental issues, human rights causes, gender issues, social and economic reform initiatives, Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen was able to overcome their defeat in the 1990 federal election and succeeded in 1994 in being reelected to the federal parliament as the third party.
Since the mid-nineties, the paradigm of sustainability has become a common denominator for many policies of the party. Ending devastation and exploitation of the environment, fighting social in justice, defending civil liberties and enhancing gender democracy and individual freedom, as well as supporting the development of democracy and the rule of law world-wide and a policy for non violence remain the fundamental orientation of the party.
In 1998, Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen got 6,7% in the federal election. The party was able to form a new coalition together with the Social Democratic Party. This coalition has been reelected in September 2002 with 8,6% of the popular vote. Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen hold three portfolios in the government: Foreign Affairs with Joschka Fischer, Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture with Renate Künast and Environment with Jürgen Trittin. The party has been successful in implementing policies it had long fought for. We initiated a new eco-tax system that taxes the consumption of energy thereby giving private households as well as the industry an economic incentive to reduce their energy consumption. The tax revenue (roughly 15 billion Euro) is being used to reduce the taxation of labour by substituting partially the contributions of employees and employers to the old age pensions system. Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen have also been successful in getting a deal with the industry to phase out nuclear energy within the next 20 years and we have passed a law accordingly, which regulates this phase out and, for instance, limits the nuclear reprocessing cycle and reduces the number of nuclear waste transports and maintains the most strict level of safety measures. Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen have secured a change of the old citizenship law of Germany, substituting in principal the traditional, "law of the blood" by the republican "law of the land". We have also been successful in changing the public opinion on immigration, forming a broad coalition ranging from churches to NGO's, to business, in favour of a modern German immigration law. A new law, reforming the nature protection law, strengthens the role of environmental NGO's and defines state of the art agriculture in a more pro-environment way. An income-tax reform was iniciated, reducing tax-rates and giving the greatest tax relief to low earning households. On foreign policy, Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen have consistently supported a EU enlargement and integration, arguing from a federalist prospective for the future of Europe, for most of the last three years, the party was less than unified on the difficult issues of our governments support for the war in Kosovo and, after September, 11th 2001, the fight against terrorism. However, in a party conference at the end of 2001, there was an overwhelming majority for a resolution, that explained our party position on the fight against terrorism and on the consequences of this experience on our policies to worlds peace, international justice, human rights and the international role of law.

Current Situation
More than 46.000 people are members of Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen. The national party headquarter is in Berlin. Following the federal structure of Germany, with 16 federal states, there are 16 state party organizations, with a high measure of autonomy. On the communal level the party counts 480 county sections and 2.500 local sections. On local state and federal levels, there are many working groups, which play an active role in developing the policies of the party. Particularly on the national level, there is an increasing interest in those working groups, to develop contacts with their green counterparts in other countries. Contacts with these groups can be established by the party headquarters. The green youth (Grüne Jugend) - around 4.000 people between 14 and 28 years of age - have decided not to stay independent from the party itself, as they have been, but to join collectively in an effort to improve the co-operation and their influence on Green policies and politics.
Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen are represented in the German parliament (Bundestag) by 55 MPs (32 of these are women). That represents 8,6% of the vote in the 2002 national election. Since autumn of 1999, Michaele Schreyer, as commissioner for budget, is the first green member on the European Commission in Brussels. On the state level, Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen are in coalition with the Social Democratic Party in the federal states of Nordrhein-Westfalen and Schleswig-Holstein.
In 2003, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen held two big party conferences, with 800 delegates each. The first one in June decided on the current reform agenda of the government on social and economic policy. The 2nd party conference in November, voted on an electoral platform for the European elections and nominated the green candidates for the European Parliament.
In June 2004 the German Greens increased their votes at the European elections and can now boast of 13 MEPs.
At the September 2005 national elections, the German Green Party got 8,19 % of the vote and 51 MPs.
