Party profile Green List:
The party foundation was at the end of 2004 when about hundred eco-activists from green groups and citizens initiatives from Zagreb decided to organize their further work and activities as political party. Those people all lived and work in capital of Croatia, Zagreb and there for they decided to take the name Zeleni za Zagreb (Greens for Zagreb).
In Croatia in that time had existed even seven political parties that had the "green" in the name, but they were not enough active and present in public. Most of them could be called green only because they had been advocating for clean environment.
Zeleni za Zagreb for the first time included individuals from eco-NGOs as well as from woman and human rights organizations.
The Program that was accepted at the foundation congress was made on the basis of Basic Principals of EFGP and Global Green Charter. The main principals of our Program are: ecological wisdom, social justice, sustainable development, active and direct democracy, equation of minorities (woman, sexual, national, racial, etc...) and pro-peace activism.
These principals were built-in the party's organization and structure. Zeleni za Zagreb (today Green List) is the only political party in Croatia that has a male/female co-chairing and this principal of gender balance is built in whole structure as well as it was applied on election lists.
The highest decision body is General Assembly (congress) of the Party. It must be at least once a year. Between two Assemblies there is a Council as the highest decision making body. It consists of representatives of branches and those that are elected in parliament or local assemblies and councils.
The Main Board has the operating position. It consists of at least seven persons that are elected by the General Assembly of the Party.
At the beginning or end of each year we have the General Assembly of the Party(congress). Every fourth year the new leadership should be elected.
Until today (December 2008) we have 389 members. One third of them are regularly paying the membership fee which is about 15 Euros per year. Our finance policy is based upon membership fees and elected councilors fees donations. This is not much but it gives us a certain financial independency.
Zeleni za Zagreb participated alone at local election that had been in May 2005, only four and half month after the foundation. At their first run they made their first and only election success until now – five local councilors in four Zagreb's districts. The results were between 6,1% and 11,86%.
After such stimulating beginning Zeleni za Zagreb continued to work on Zagreb territory mostly through the district's councils. The international cooperation with greens from EGP was not neglected. Vlasta Toth, the female co-chair is a member of the Steering Group of GEWD and coordinator of Green Adriatic Network (today included in Mediterranean Network). Our representatives regularly participate at Round Tables of Green Local Councilors of Central European Towns as well as at EGP Councils and Congresses. In Autumn 2006 we organized in Zagreb GEWD meeting of the Balkan's countries, in November 2007 a meeting of Mediterranean Network and in September 2008 we organized an international conference in Osijek about energy policy under the name "Sun is the best reactor – NO to nuclear".
These activities were recognized by some groups outside Zagreb and they expressed their wish to join us. As it was not possible under the name with "... for Zagreb" in February of 2007 General assembly of the Party decided to change the name of the party to Zelena Lista (Green List).
Until today, we have branches outside Zagreb: in Karlovac, Ogulin, Varazdin, Ozalj, Baska (on the Krk island), Vojnic and Duga Resa.
In summer 2008 we founded the youth organization inside the party. They called themselves Youth of Green List and already made the first contact with FYEG. Three of our young members participated in Green Summer University at Frankfurt am Oder in August 2008.
Zelena Lista detained the same Program principals of Zeleni za Zagreb as well as the principals of party structure. The only changes were made in Statute concerning the territorial aspects. We had to submit our internal organization to the state territorial hierarchy due to local election demands, but we tried as much as possible to maintain the local independency of branches in internal decision making process.
At the election assembly of the Green List where the new leadership was elected, the changes in Statute were also made. These changes enable the representatives of the youth to delegate their representatives to the Main board and to the Party Council.
Current Government:
Last National election were in November 2007. Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) won again and made the coalition with Croatian Peasant Party, Croatian Social Liberal Party and representatives of minorities. HDZ is right-wing party, the member of International Association of Christian Democrats, also known as former Tudjman's party. Characteristic of these last parliamentary elections was a big bipolarization on two main and the greater parties – HDZ and SDP (right wing – left wing leaders). This was extremely bad condition for all small and non-parliamentary parties as well as for all independent lists.
Parties represented in National Parliament (from November 2007): Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ-right), Social Democrat Party (SDP-left), Croatian Peoples Party (HNS-centre), Croatian Peasant Party (HSS-centre right), Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS-centre right), Croatian Party of Law (HSP-right), Croatian Pensions Party (HSU- centre), representatives of minorities (8 MP).
Election information:
