European Greens congratulate French greens on good showing in first round of municipal elections:

The Spokespersons of the European Green Party today congratulated the French Green Party (les Verts) for a good performance in the first round of the municipal elections on March 9th and encouraged French voters to vote for Green candidates in the second round on March 16th.

EGP Co-Spokesperson Philippe Lamberts said: "The French Greens had many good results in the municipal election's first round, both in the areas where Green candidates were on a joint list along with Socialist Party candidates and where Greens were running on their own. Les Verts have increased considerably their level of support since the Presidential election in 2007 and although the French Greens still have a lot of work to do if they want to fulfil their electoral potential, we agree with les Verts' National Secretary Cécile Duflot that this result is a "petite renaissance" and is a result that the Greens can build on."

EGP Co-Spokesperson Ulrike Lunacek continued: "It is very important that all those voters who want better urban planning, much more investment in public transport and more use of renewable energy in their towns and cities vote for Green candidates in the second round on Sunday 16th March, especially in those municipalities where Greens stand a good chance of being elected. French towns and cities, as in the rest of Europe, face serious ecological challenges as well as problems of social exclusion and they need Green councillors to really tackle those problems effectively. It is also vital that all those voters who want to ensure sustainable agricultural practices in France, including no GMO cultivation, vote for Green candidates.  So we urge voters to go out and vote for les Verts on 16th March."
