European Greens congratulate les Verts on good results in 2nd round of municipal elections:
The Spokespersons of the European Green Party today congratulated the French Green Party (les Verts) on their performance in the second round of the municipal elections on Sunday 16th March.
EGP Co-Spokesperson Ulrike Lunacek said: "Sunday's results are further evidence that the French Greens are gradually rebuilding their electoral strength and that a growing number of voters recognise the need for a strong Green presence in French councils. In particular, we would like to send our warmest congratulations to Dominique Voynet who was elected Mayor of Montreuil with 54, 19% of the vote and Jacques Boutault, the re-elected Mayor of Paris' second arrondissement whose joint list with the Socialist Party received 68.3% of the votes. It is also worth pointing out that in the first round of the elections on 9th March, the Verts' candidates had an average score of more than 12%, a result which compares well with the performance of the strongest Green parties in Europe. "
EGP Co-Spokesperson Philippe Lamberts continued: "We are delighted that les Verts will have more councillors than they had before the municipal elections, not only because they will be able to make a real difference to how their towns and cities are governed, but because this latest election result is an important part of the process of renewal which the French Greens are currently going through. We European Greens will continue to offer the French Greens all the support we can as they continue this process of renewal and seek to increase their electoral support even further in the future."
